Icarus I, oil on linen, 100cm x 160cm (2019)
Inspired by the myth, the series explores the escape from the labyrinth devised by Daedalus for King Minos through the freeing of architectural geometries into free-flowing organic shapes. Wings of wax become similes for cities built on ever ascending notions of progress, the paintings a metaphor for the present day concerns of a warming planet and rising oceans. The wings of Icarus melted but the romantic allusions of the story were destined to endure, embodied here with the accompanying sense of the infinite.
Through states of aspiration and turbulence, the series culminates with the immortal spirit of Icarus, like a civilisation of the future emerged from the storm, where opposites united transcend the physical dimension, a sanctuary of wisdom, where ocean, sky, cloud and wave unite.
